The preceding singles suggested that Abigail Hopkins was building towards a very good next album. At long last that album's here and it transpires the oracles were right. "The Memoirs Of An Outlaw" draws in the best elements of folk noir and combines them with some dramatic percussion. Any songwriter that manages to reference a Ford Cortina 1968, must surely know the importance image plays in lyrics and it would appear Hopkins has in abundance. Dark and sinister, captivating like a cobra, this is the album that sees Abigail Hopkins deliver her promissory notes.
Abigail Hopkins - CD - The Memoirs Of An Outlaw
Well, this lady just keeps on comin' up with the goods!! 'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw' is Abigail Hopkins' new album and what an outing it is - wonderfully diverse and spectacularly original, 'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw' is as rewarding as it is challenging but if you're prepared to give Hopkins a go then she'll find a way to pay you back with her magical, mystical poetic tapestries of folkish sound that border on the experimental yet seem totally grounded and balanced.
Abigail Hopkins is something of a folk alchemist and unlike anyone else I know of; to understand Hopkins' earthy folk way you must first think of someone as diverse and original as Kate Bush, then think of songs written with a dark cloud over them al la Nick Cave, next you need to drop in a hefty portion of the unpredictable and a few drops of unique and once stirred and mixed together they combine to form a precious product that's seemingly robust yet inherently beautiful, memorably distinctive yet familiarly unfamiliar! Abigail Hopkins should be categorised in a niche all of her own coz folk, nu-folk, alt-folk - whatever, none of those gets close to telling you enough about this amazingly talented artist or her unique music!
Anyway, that's something about Abigail Hopkins but what about this album, 'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw'? Well, it's nothing short of stunning! Hopkins has once again managed to provide that wow factor whilst maintaining a girl-next-door reality. 'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw' is a work that really needs to be listened to and experienced in all its earthy beauty. 'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw' isn't exactly easy listening but it is worthwhile listening. Abigail Hopkins manages to generate a haunting quality that lurks almost ever-present behind her enthralling nu-folk wares. Hopkins always seems able to get an edge, a sharpness to her songs, no matter what the subject matter. Hopkins can twist and turn emotions, she can excite and she can lull, she can scare yet she can sooth - Abigail Hopkins has a presence that's hard to ignore and one that is extremely rewarding if you can get into her music and perhaps even her mind!
'The Memoirs Of An Outlaw' by Abigail Hopkins is scarily good; outrageously different yet cultishly commercial. This is one hell of a work - ok, it needs to be given respectful consideration and perhaps having an open mind would help to really get the Hopkins message but, if you can let go of any preconceptions and/or prejudices the outcome will be rewarding and enlightening. Another special piece of work from an amazingly original singer/songwriter. Quite brilliant!!
Izzie Voodoo is obviously something of a DIY music machine; multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist, multi-this, multi-that!! Yes, Izzie Voodoo does it all herself and she does a bloody good job; 'The Push', turn it up loud folks, is an exhilarating and electrifying outing from this visionary digital experimentalist.
'The Push' is Izzie Voodoo's debut album and she certainly goes all out, no holds barred etc. 'The Push' is dark electronica - pulsatingly and hypnotically rhythmic, heavy and earthy, scintillatingly organic yet totally digital - it works and certainly has teeth. This bugger bites deep and bites hard - and once bitten, you're hooked and under Voodoo's spell. Voodoo's individualistically breathy and sexy vocal style and polished delivery are absolutely suited to her slickly delivered rock electronica; something approaching Kate Bush meets Hawkwind is the end result and what a result!! Now, this may not be for everyone but, I bet many will be surprised with how much they are drawn in to its dark-side - it's quite contagious in a spell-like kinda way. Izzie Voodoo definitely knows how to hold your attention and even after nearly fifty minutes I still felt the need to press 'PLAY' again - intoxicating and morish, 'The Push' had me hooked after just one blast through!
'The Push' is clever for not trying to be too clever - if you get my meaning!! Voodoo takes her music to places that are not too self-indulgent - she could so easily have made 'The Push' too Voodoo-ish and it wouldn't have worked but, she's managed to get a really nice blend of normality in with the abnormal! Voodoo keeps it all accessible and believable to even the most anti-electro heads out there. And, Voodoo has even managed to keep her electronic dirges just on the right side of commercially acceptable; they have an inherent pop sensibility about them and several would work well if released as singles. Yes, Izzie Voodoo is one shrewd operator!!
'The Push' by Izzie Voodoo could so easily have failed, totally and utterly. But, Izzie Voodoo's canny way has come up trumps; 'The Push' works on so many levels and is a really enjoyable modernistic work of a very high standard. 'The Push' certainly kept me entertained and smiling from start to finish - I think Izzie Voodoo has got it absolutely spot-on and 'The Push' is sufficiently open to all-comers to make it a potential gold mine. Izzie Voodoo is clearly a gifted musician and her experimental bent totally suits this electronically biased genre - and, electronic music aint gonna go away any time soon so I can see nothing but success for Izzie Voodoo and her darkly earthy digital musical world. 'The Push' by Izzie Voodoo is a crackin' album of the times - it's well conceived and superbly performed and I hope Izzie Voodoo get the plaudits she deserves. Great stuff!!

There are not too many people out there who release an album as something of a prequel to a book but Soul Connection is one such project put together by the fertile mind of Paul K (Paul Kirkpatrick) serving as a companion piece to his forthcoming book Soul Connected.
Soul Connection is an instrumental album that welds together electronic textures, soundscapes and beats with more organic instrumentation such as piano, acoustic and electric guitars and haunting strings to create a dense thought-provoking soundtrack that leads the mind on an epic journey of self discovery. Each track conjours vivid images that are further enhanced by subtle vocal samples that are littered among the twelve tracks.
A Calling To Prayer features wordless chants that had my mind whirring in a multitude of directions bring visions of native tribes and religious congregations. Elsewhere Jorma's Ship mixes up simplistic piano with electronic beats and waves of guitar to create a stunning vision, Hanoi Blue is a stunning combination of half whispers, plucked strings and tinkering electronics that segues effortlessly into the lush soundscape of If I Could Dream, a floating space like track that for some strange reason made me think of floating high above the clouds watching the earth revolve, night becoming day, day becoming night. Coming Home continues the dream-like theme combining lush piano with subtle chiming guitars, whilst in direct contrast Oceans offers up a rockier influence to Paul K's sound with his standard electronica clashing with chugging, crunchy guitar riffs to form a harsher more industrial landscape.
Each and every track on here makes the mind and imagination work overtime, Paul K has managed to create a visionary album that evolves with each spin, Soul Connection is an album to submerge yourself in, if you want an album that will really challenge your mind I suggest you grab hold of a copy of this, turn the lights down low and allow yourself to be carried off by the lush inventive sounds contained within.
This album is a sort of precursor to a book that will be written by the artiste. When I say “Will”, it will be based on the feedback Paul K receives from listeners of this album. This may be in the form of email or utterings or real letters, pen and ye-olde pencil style. Hey, but stop right there oh cynical reader. The man is earnest and honest on this, his debut release. His soundscapes inspire and are generally most pleasing to this listener. A Calling To Prayer recalls prime-time Aphex, his more downbeat moments of course. On other tracks some of the instrumentation jars with an unexpected ferocity. Some of this album is not quite the electronic noodle-fest that it promises at its outset. “Coming Home” jolts and asks questions of the listener with some heavy guitar. All in all this is an intriguing debut that comes recommended. Challenging and inventive, Paul K has crafted a debut that deserves a deeper level examination.
Soul Connection is the first solo album of the producer and songwriter Paul K. The album is based mainly on electronic background. Individual parts are rich in sea of sounds, a combination of acoustic and electric guitar, synths and even classic piano. This is adding mysticism to the music. The music included in 'Soul Connection' should encourage you to sink into the sounds, listening to the music in your own way, looking at and considering the thoughts and feelingsThanks to this kind of music it's possible to float far and think that this is the key to the main goal of Paul K. The musical style of this artist is compared to some of the music composed by TANGERINE DREAM or KAFTWERK. After listening to some of the pieces I am personally inclined to find links with DEAD CAN DANCE for example "A calling to prayer" mostly probably because of the female vocalsObjectively considered, Paul K combines sounds and electronics creating calm and in places mystical music, opening sometimes even black corners. I think that for fans of this kind of music this could be quite a promising looking hit
Seven years in the making it may be, but Tusken Coalition’s brutal self titled debut still erupts from the tweeters with all the subtlety of a lit cigarette butt to the retina.
Opener ‘Long Hair Bald Heads’ couldn’t be more hostile; a juddering mash of LDN-brand hip-hop, gruesome gabba beats and (come the chorus) a scream akin to Seputura’s Max Cavalera being dragged through a field of coals (tied to a moped). Things don’t give up from there, Tusken’s world is clearly as enamoured with Hardcore DIY ethics as it is with G’s and hand grenades. ‘Cobra Meeting’ is all low slung submarine bleeps and phat 80’s snares; the type we though time had sadly forgotten, whilst ‘Base Existence’ illustrates a life of drug-addled gloom. Closer ‘Exit Strategy’ sees them winding down over a spiraling, cold electro loop, depicting a life of being “washed up in obscurity and shit out of luck”. A UK Hip Hop record that provokes emotions, then. and even if at times negative, it’s surely better than a generation of bling-chasing pimp wannabees.

BasilicaMusic is proud to support the GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital) appeal.
Great Ormond Street Hospital opened its doors on 14th February 1852, with just 10 beds, 2 wards & 20 staff. Today, they have 353 beds, 38 wards & 2,700 staff, treating children from throughout the UK and world for a wide range of conditions. Although the running costs of the hospital are met by the NHS, the charity needs to raise over £50 million each year to fund, the latest specialist equipment, medical research, redevelopment and family accommodation. We want to ensure the hospital remains a world class specialist paediatric hospital, giving new hope to children suffering from complex and life-threatening conditions. Click below for details
